As we soon embark on the final week of Lent, it is good for us to ask ourselves which side of the road we might be standing on, for Christ desires to also bring salvation into each of our lives. Obama’s unwavering message of humility and hope resonated deeply with our students, leaving a lasting impression that will undoubtedly shape their future perspectives. The boys, from Year 8-12, handled themselves exceptionally with many crews achieving personal bests and/or podium finishes. The Year 10 4x crew even posted a Head of the River record-breaking time on their way to win their division. Finally, congratulations to these boys who were awarded House Colours in Assembly yesterday and to Crowther House for being the Street Ball Champions for 2023. They have had tremendous success in previous years and we wish them all the best, hopefully next stop will be the Worlds in Singapore!

We have so many varied opportunities throughout the year where we see the warmth, direction and care our older boys provide to our younger boys. Thank you to Father Lord who led the service, Hayley Blakiston and Borwick House Choir for the superb singing and to the family members of our School Officers who supported their sons. Thank you to all the parents who participated in organising year level events, fostered relations with other parents, and supported the School and students on so many levels across 2022.
Congratulations to the Year 5 boys who were selected to compete in an Interschool Chess competition on Monday 20 March. They played 7 rounds of games against 32 teams with great strategy selection and success to win the overall competition. Best individual performers were Andy Chen , Roy Gu , Leo Wang , Tom McLean . Our first ‘Ute Full of Food’ for this year will be held on Friday 31 March. Brighton Grammar has a long-standing commitment in supporting St Mark’s Anglican Church in Fitzroy. All food items will be transported by the ‘Ute’ to St Mark’s, where it is distributed to needy families.

Our players and supporters maintained respect towards each other, the opposition and referees at all times – an important display of positive masculinity. Be inspired and start your day with purpose at the next BGS Business Breakfast featuring guest speaker Jo Gilbert. With over 5 years of experience leading commercial partnerships, events and match day experiences at the AFL, Jo is passionate about female leadership and creating opportunities for team members to be their best selves.
For our Year 3 and Year 5 boys there has certainly been no particular build-up that in turn creates stress or anxiety. The NAPLAN testing is a simple snapshot on a given day in comparison to what I would describe as an ongoing video which is of greater value over the course of the year. Fortunately, our boys are regularly provided with the opportunity to complete work under test conditions which provides them with experiences to complete the NAPLAN with confidence.

Our Long Day Program recently commenced for the Year 12 students in the Hancock Wing. Year 12 boys can stay and are supported to work in the Hancock Wing each afternoon until 7.30pm. We continue to have strong numbers attending and I encourage the Year 12s to all benefit from this great program.
Last weekend, a large group of rowing students took to Nagambie Lakes to compete at the APS Head of the River. In Term 3 the boys will have a chance to share their experiences with their parents and the Year 8s through the Breakthrough Expo. Then the Breakthrough chapter will complete as the Capstone journey moves on towards the Great South West. There was also the opportunity to learn about social issues around Melbourne and work with charities such as St Kilda Mums, Carenet, The Good Box and Impact House. The boys also used innovation and creativity to design new solutions and create a collaborative mural with the clients from Bayley House.
The rowing teams are showing great promise and we look forward to hearing how our Year 10 team does in the Australian National Championships in WA this week. Last Saturday, I had the great pleasure of heading out of Melbourne to spend time at Nagambie Lakes to watch the Head of the River. At yesterday’s Secondary School assembly, House Colours were presented, and it was encouraging to see the number of boys who have committed to working together and contributing to their House. I never realised the effect that littering, and pollution has on our environment.

The beginning of a new semester offers the opportunity to reflect on what we have achieved this year as well as assess our goals for the remaining six months of 2023. In particular our focus will continue to be on all things academics as well as high performance. Fr Lord showed us his special church clothing and gowns, which had different meanings and purposes. The boys shared with Fr Lord their knowledge of Easter and why we use eggs to symbolise life. It was lovely to hear their simple thoughts and also quite advanced explanations shared from home. With our Easter Bonnet Parades in the GBR Hall the boys excitedly showed off their creations as they waved walking past their guests.
