The lifted pretty aromatics give way to similar vibrant spice on the palate. There is plenty of lush generous fruit alongside juicy red cherries, supported by clove, nutmeg and five spice. Soft velvet like tannins work with the bright acid to contribute to a sustained length of flavour.
The established vineyards on the Peninsula now have the significant advantage of meaningful vine age. But the reality is that many of those vineyards would likely be planted with different clones, different densities and sometimes different orientations based on today’s knowledge. Crittenden, code 38 a horticulturist by trade, scouted for a Peninsula property in the early 1980s alongside surgeon Dr Richard McIntyre, who was also looking for a suitable site. Victoria Pun began her career as a speech pathologist, but she was diverted following a tasting in the Yarra Valley. After being offered a casual job opportunity as a cellar door assistant in 2019, her interest in wine deepened, beginning a first role in hospitality that was disrupted by the pandemic. Pun passed the Advanced Sommelier exam with the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2022 while working at Vue de Monde. She is the recipient of the Sommelier Australia Education Scholarship in 2022 and is currently pouring at The Recreation Bistro & Bottleshop. Simon Black is the winemaker at Red Hill’s Montalto, setting up the winery in 2009 and having run it ever since.
Many early plantings contained some of the Bordeaux red varieties, though principally cabernet sauvignon, along with riesling, a buzz variety in the ’70s and early ’80s. Pinot noir had been planted many years earlier, in the late 1930s, in a small plot at what is now Morning Star Estate. The Restaurant at Montalto - a seasonal, multi-course set menu by Head Chef Adam Johnston, crafted with estate-grown produce and paired to our wines.
Montalto Pinot Noir - a benchmark Mornington Peninsula style; red-fruited, supple, beautifully balanced. Thoughtful and evocative, the Two Paddocks 2024 shows exotic wild herb, red brick and shist derived aromatics. This drives the entry into an enveloping rich, warm, succulent and elegant mouthfeel. The wine is tightly packed and complete, showing tactile finesse and persistence whilst also delivering generosity and enjoyment in its youth. Black countered that recent vintages would likely play a part in that, and several of the wines were likely made to be consumed more readily – that even though there was a decently sized selection, it was still a limited survey. It’s an opportunity to collaborate with some exceptional vineyards and people across the state and produce wines that connect with our philosophy of making wine from the ground up. All of our decisions are focused on how we can do things better in order to minimise our impact on the environment.
Due to the warmer season, the palate delivers delicious dark fruits and savoury flavours which are complemented by fine-grained tannins. This wine was aged in a blend of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 10 months. Bright and aromatic, the nose delivers raspberry, strawberry and red cherry with savoury spice notes.
Hand picked, all fruit is chilled overnight to 12 degrees Celsius. The fruit was destemmed and sorted to create five individual, clonal, whole berry ferments. Every block from Primavera made it into the final blend – just a beautiful vintage on that red soil. All parcels were matured in French oak – 25% new, 75% older – for eight months in 225L barriques Taransaud, Vicard and D&J. Sappy, moreish and complex, this wine can be enjoyed now but will gain interest over the medium term. Elegantly structured palate, presenting refined flavours of red cherry, ripe raspberry, and subtle cranberry, complemented by nuanced layers of gentle spices, subtle black tea leaf, and earthy minerality. Polished tannins and lively acidity ensure impeccable balance and sophisticated elegance. Light and feathery, with nutty flavours, bright acidity, a fine powdery tannin texture, and a firm red cherry and red fruited finish.
Mansons Farm Pinot Noir is hand crafted in very limited quantities. Our 2016 is medium ruby red in colour with a bouquet of black cherry, savoury brown spice, and notes of baronial flower. On the palate, a dense, dark berry entry and hints of spice are supported by an elegant tannin structure. Dark cherry and spice aromas integrate nicely with a hint of forest floor (sous bois).

William Downie has become somewhat of a legendary winemaking figure over the last decade or so, with a specialty in pinot noir.
A graceful Pinot Noir with persistence of flavour that will balance well with wood roasted quail and grilled radicchio. Now over 30 years old, this vineyard is just now reaching its stride in producing hauntingly unique wines that few vineyards can parallel. The 2019 Bishop Creek opens up with wet stone, crushed granite and generous brambly blackberry. Underlying the fruit and minerality are subtle roasted meat and game aroma, toasted nut and a general savory essence  as the wine begins to crack open in the glass. This wine will age for years to come as the tannins integrate and the fruit fleshes out in the bottle. Extraordinary colour – deep crimson, magenta with an almost opaque heart.
