She is slated to attend her first official royal engagement after ending maternity leave on Sept. 12 for the launch of her charitable fashion label, which benefits the U.K. She will then embark on a tour of Africa with Prince Harry and Archie for two weeks starting Sept. 23. The royals will be traveling to South Africa, Angola and Malawi on their first official trip to the continent. Williams touched on the evolution of her friendship with the Duchess of Sussex in an interview with Australia’s The Sunday Project last year. We have known each other for a long time, but we really kind of are relying on each other quite a lot recently,” she said of the bond. And that support definitely goes both ways—Meghan wore a blazer Serena designed on her royal tour of Australia.
This sounds like a great topic for a podcast given that Meghan has been fighting for more women’s rights since childhood. Amid swirling controversy about her appearance on Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex's "Archetypes" podcast, Serena Williams took to Instagram to share a photo of the two long-time friends posing alongside Williams' daughter, Olympia. Harry and Meghan have a multi-year deal to produce and host podcasts for Spotify under their production company Archewell Audio. Meghan has said the “Archetypes” podcast will focus on harmful labels and stereotypes applied to women. “The focus ends up being on how it looks instead of how it feels,” Meghan said. “I somehow managed to win, but I was so emotionally spent and just like Serena Williams so emotionally drained that it was, it was crazy. And, you know, and then like every night after that, I just was with her the whole time and was like you’re going to be with me,” said Williams, who has indicated that her final tournament will be the U.S. The longtime pals met back in 2010 at the Super Bowl and have since supported each other in their careers and personal lives.

Williams opened up in her interview with "The Project" about how it has been "really tough" to return to tennis full-time since giving birth to Olympia last September. She described herself as "really excelling" at some aspects of motherhood and feeling "like a fish out of water" in others. Spotify also stated that the royal couple did not reach the productivity criterion required to get the full deal’s headline reward. They also discussed the importance of finding a support system of women supporting other women, one of the greatest examples of which was Williams's vocal support of Meghan Markle after the Sussexes' bombshell Oprah interview. Meghan was also seen frequently leaning back to speak to fashion mogul and Vogue editor Anna Wintour in the seats behind her and the ladies were photographed deep in conversation throughout the match.

Her influence was also recognized in both the 2019 and 2020 editions of Powerlist,  the 100 most influential Britons of African and Afro-Caribbean descent.
