Meursault Rouge, Domaine Coche-Dury Fine Wine from Burgundy
In reality there are no wine from the Domaine which is harvested on more than 1 ha of Vineyard, and therefore the quantities of all wines are quite limited. The prices are largely outside of the control of JFC, his ex-cellar prices are not so high – at least if there was some wine left to sell! – but the middlemen continue to make hay while the sun shines.
A 1992 Coche Meursault Chevalieres village and a Ramonet Chassagne Morgeot 1993 were together in a flight with a completely forgettable Prosper Maufoux Batard-Montrachet as the third wheel. The first time champagne chavost I tasted Coche-Dury was in 1995, with Danish wine friends and some rather colourful wine people and entrepreneurs. I could now recite the usual Coche estate history and its glorious wines, but I won’t.

It over-delivers on quality, but comes in at a price well under what its level of quality would normally command. ‘Rougeots’ is leesy and mineral-driven, with flavors of citrus and nuts; balanced, bright, and straight up delicious. In a year marked by rain, restraint, and rigorous selection, Bordeaux has produced a vintage of aromatic finesse and classical charm - though not without its challenges. Domaine Coche-Dury’s Meursaults have intense honey and lime flower aromas with a rounded and silky palate and a very long and lingering flavour of plum and hazelnut in particular. This toasted fragrance is Coche-Dury’s olfactory hallmark. It is obtained through a gentle, controlled oxidation process.

Give this 12 months and you’ll be in a very happy place. Excellent texture, chalky phenolic acid complex that works brilliantly. The mid-palate depth is the thing that demonstrates the step up in quality here. The most “common” wine from Coche-Dury is his generic Meursault, which is perhaps not quite as generic as one might expect from the table above. There are in total 7-8 different village Meursaults, all vinified and bottled separately. Vinificationen is fairly traditional, but with quite frequent battonage. Fermentation takes place on oak cask, and the proportion of new oak varies from year to year, but generally Coche-Dury uses quite a lot new oak. In some years they have used up to 50% new casks on the top wines. The wines are raised in barral for 15 to 22 months, and are bottled without filtration.
