ThePositive Ageing Strategy Co-ordinator also supported the Wairarapa WalkingFestival by leading a walk around the Carterton “Op” shops. This highly successful walk combined a focus on walking and recycling. CDCassisted with promotion and marketing of the events through variouschannels. Our Walking and Cycling Co-ordinator attendedfour roofing services markham Wairarapa Walking Festival events and led a three hour walk at PukahaMount Bruce Te Arapiki o Tawhaki.

Speakers included Mayor Darcy Byrne, Councillor Vicki Clay and aguest speaker, Robert Helstroom, a returning member of the Environment LDG. The Local Government Act 1993 requires councils toadopt a code of meeting practice that is consistent with the Model Code ofMeeting Practice prescribed by the Office of Local Government, within 12 monthsof an ordinary election of councillors. Prior to adopting the code of meetingpractice, councils must place the document on public exhibition for 28 days,and invite submissions for 42 days. At an Ordinary Council Meeting on11 March 2025, Council approved a draft Code of Conduct incorporating thesechanges to be placed on public exhibition. Council received one submission,which did not necessitate any changes to the draft Code of Conduct placed onpublic exhibition. Separately, officers have made one change, to clarify theGeneral Manager’s discretion to consider complaints made outside the3-month timeframe specified in the Procedures for the Administration of theModel Code of Conduct.

In 2018, this Council voted to endorse ICAN’s Citiesappeal, a call from councils all over the world for their governments toendorse this Treaty. We were joined by a number of other councils in this call,including the City of Sydney and Newcastle. The Treaty entered into force in2021 and in that same year, a motion in support of the Treaty waspassed unanimously at the ALGA National General Assembly in Canberra.

Councilprovides dog owners with information regarding education programmes andobedience courses and offers dog owners a discount on registration fees forneutered/spayed dogs. Thereare no specific dog exercise areas defined as there are enough open spaces andparks around the district for appropriate exercise. However, a rural publicpark at Sparks Park where dogs can be exercised off the leash has becomepopular with dog owners, and poo disposal bags and a dog poo bin have beenplaced there.
