By the 1930s other state parks were opened in Illinois but Starved Rock State Park remained the most extensively used park in the system. We take great pride in introducing you to this wonderful geologically and historically significant area. We have a campground right on the beautiful sandy shores of the Illinois river with camping for tents, pop ups, tear drops and camper vans. It was very quiet when we camped in a 35 ft RV with tent which was allowed.
The rhythmic motion of paddling can have a calming effect on the mind as you focus on synchronizing your movements with the water. As you paddle through the water, you engage multiple muscle groups in your arms, shoulders, back, and core. This helps to improve strength and flexibility while burning calories and toning muscles.
This is a picturesque spot to kayak where you can paddle alongside cliffs, bluffs and dells, with forests and shallow banks that are ideal for picnic stops. You can launch your kayak at theBusse Lake Boating Center, where you can also rent kayaks if you don’t have your own. Changing Rooms and Showers – North Avenue Beach has several changing rooms and showers available for public use. These facilities are especially convenient for those who want to freshen up before heading out to explore the rest of the city. Go east for approximately 5 miles to the T-intersection, which is Rt. 178. Go north for approximately 5 miles and follow the signs into the Park.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to wade or swim in the river, canyons or from any park shoreline. Primarily St. Peter sandstone, laid down in a huge shallow inland sea more than 425 million years ago and later brought to the surface. While the areas along the river and its tributaries still are predominantly forested, much of the area is a flat, gently rolling plain.
Also, consider the tides and currents as they can affect your fishing success. Plan your route and make sure you have enough time to get back before it gets dark.
